Description
Thomas Paine was America's first best-selling author. His pamphlet, "Common Sense" Over 500,000 copies were sold in 1776. That's astonishing considering that there were only 2.5 million colonists in America at the time.
Like Jefferson, Paine was a Deist and his ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights. His quote, "Independence is my happiness, the world is my country, and my religion is to do good." indicates a man way ahead of his time.
John Adams, the second President of the United States said, "Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain." Paine was called, "a corsetmaker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination".
