Artist's Description

In 1845 Frederick Douglas' autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, became a bestseller and influential in supporting abolition. Northerners found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave!

A genuine social visionary, Douglas also supported woman's suffrage, held many public offices, and was the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of Victoria Woodhull on the impracticable, small, but far foreseeing Equal Rights Party ticket.

Douglas had a profound understanding of power and what motivates people. That's why his quote is as relevant today as it was in his time that, "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and never will."
